| A Florida man named Scott Weires has canceled the order for his long-awaited Nissan GT-R. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you? | |

| Wow that is interesting and I don't blame him one bit. You buy a 50+grand car(im not sure on sticker price for a new GTR) but you buy a car like that to race/beat on, its a freaking preformance car for fuck sakes. | |

| I'm sure lots of companies will be as flexible as possible when it comes down to it. This is a perfect example that these cars are meant for performance (mainly) and style. If you're not even allowed to open them up why waste the money. | |

| Well, not quite. Companies will see this as a way to void warranty if something on the car breaks due to abuse. So it may be a good thing for companies to consider. I wonder what the final say will be. | |

| by the time i can afford a BRAND new car, i wont have to worry about driving it hard, and im not sure how many people here plan to be doctors/race car drivers, so who care? if you have the money to buy a new car like that, youll have the money to fix it after you fuck it up. | |

| I could see this from "lesser" companies who might be worried about the quality of the product they are selling. Maybe they aren't sure their stuff can deal with it? I still have my reservations that this will happen. Many companies pride themselves on their performance cars. Someone call me on this in 2012, but from now on, this is where I stand. | |

| If you keep reading the thread on zilvia, someone mentions that the computer can be disabled, others also mention that a stand alone system may be able to bypass it. Another person said that they only record 5 seconds before the air bag is deployed. I don't know how true any of these things are but I would take it into consideration. Also, I think other car companies have started this. Anyway, how much information could one of these boxes hold or does it only fill with data when something breaks? I really don't know how they work, chances are I will never buy a brand new car unless I make a lot of money and even then the car would be a DD while under warranty. So if this only affect the warranty issues, I don't care as I have never had a car that came with a warranty, so I won't miss it.
Anyway, what I find more surprising is him not getting the GTR... come on!
P.S.
Corey, the GTR's MRSP was $70,000 U.S, it has been bumped up by $7,000 I believe. However, dealerships are making sure to take their cut of the profit and have jacked the price up.
P.P.S I want one..... | |

| Holy shit that's a large price tag on those GT-R's! Although I guess that is one hell of a car, even for the modern designing it does have a sexy appeal.
You said that someone mentioned disabling the black box, wouldn't that be the biggest warranty void hands down?

It is a effing steal at that price. Okay Ryan, I am impressed with the attention to detail and the fact it comes out of the factory basically as a full out race car. However that rear end is very unattractive almost hideous (personal preference) And not offered in a 5/6speed? Really? That is rather a downer.

| READ THIS ON NICO FORUM. - Quote :
- One of my techs just got back from a special Nissan training GTR deal. Here are some interesting Facts.
-Can only launch the car 15 times before the transmission gives out. The most Nissan has got was 34 launches. -The fluid lists at 80 dollars a quart. It costs dealerships 49.99 a quart. The car takes 10 quarts. -The warranty depends on the driving, there is a black box in it just like an airplane. -Customers have to sign a waiver stating they will not complain about brake or transmission noise. -The brakes MUST be replaced at the same time, cost for replacing 6500. -If something goes wrong other than an oil change at the dealership, a special team needs to be called and your outta a car for a while. Sounds promising!

i would imagine this would be much the same for other really high end stuff like koenigseggs and whatnot and since it has supercar performance without the supercar price tag its still a fucking good deal
