| By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability
What is up with this?
I also read something about the government(prob only in U.S) can track you. GPS in the box coordinates with a street level map of posted speed limits....you go over....ticket in the mail. But this isent supposed to happen for a long time. If its true
New cars suck. | |

| this is a scary idea slippery slope, creeping incremnetalism call it whatever you want, but this is yet just another slight loss of privacy and just another bite out of civil liberties even if you look past all the big brother is watching stuff now your warrenty will be void because a week ago you revved it past 5000rpm and cleary that is not nessecary to operate a motor vehicle and now anyone who brings a vehicle to "track day" will no longer be able to receive warranty the only way it would seem like a good idea is if someone brought in a car with a destroyed engine and blamed it on a dealership, and then when they bring up all the data it shows 20 minutes ago you downshifted into 2nd going 180km/h however cameras in every single bathroom stall in the world MIGHT have saved the lives of 3 children in the past 50 years and cameras in every single one of our homes might save even more! | |

| Man that is WEAK! This has been going through my mind all day, it's just the fact that say you buy a car and want to enjoy racing it at say QCMA for example all the sudden your warranty is voided? I just don't understand how they can do something to this degree, you pay the sticker price on the car you expect it to have warranty! One of the reasons many people buy brand new vehicles is for the warranty. Gah shits weak. | |

So if at said event you enter a corner too hot and accidently down shift too late thus revving past the soft limiter and well into the red. Months down the road you develop a knocking noise, this should be warranty? Miss a gear and chip a tooth off the shift sleeve, warranty? Overheat the car from hot lapping, warranty? Cars are warrantied for street use ONLY! Abuse is not covered under warranty. Period. Mitsubishi sent reps down the various drag strips several years ago to monitor people. 100's of eve owners got their warranty denied from being caught flogging their cars at the track. It sucks but anything you have to sign a wavier form to do shouldn't be on the manufacture's ass to fix.

| ^This is pretty gay. Especially when almost EVERY company has a performance division. Porsche would never be caught dead doing this. They personally organise performance driving sessions at racetracks. So does Audi, BMW, and various other automakers.
I agree, abuse shoudln't be warrantied, but I don't think you should be denied warranty.

| If it ever gets to that point, which i hope it never does, it seems like a conflict of interests, the guy that mentioned the performance divisions has a good point. When you go into buy a new car the sales person will be all over the sweet performance stuff you can get or what the car can already do to get you excited and buy the car then the second you do anything BAM void warranty. I don't know if the general public would let companies or the government get away with this but who knows, scary times ahead like always. | |

| Above comment is so true, ignorance is bliss i guess. Though it won't just run out one day, first demand exceeds supply and then everyone starts fighting over it. I've heard things going both ways, lots of fuel left others saying we're almost at peak production now and demand is only going up. | |

i think that is extremely optimistic stephen harper could declare himself a dictator and make it law that the punishment for speeding is the death penalty and nobody would do shit all as long as it was in the name of safety all us motherfuckers would give up every single one of our human rights and civil liberties as long as the news was making democracy seem scary as fuck and that speeding is the most dangerous thing in the entire world i think canada would embrace canada as a dictatorship and would think death penalty for speeding is the best thing since sliced bread people who speed even 4km/h over the limit are complete fucking scum who can kill people innocent people! my children could die because of your carelessness!!! my children, my poor beautiful children!!!! and besides even if we say a lot of people did "revolt" what the fuck are they gonna do canada would just implement martial law and just fucking kill anyone who did revolt and its not like the fucking people are going to do anything about it the canadian army are so fucking brainwashed anyway i am sure they would have 0 troubles killing unarmed mothers and children if they were "traitors" if germans who really didnt even believe in the nazi regime and were just soldiers just because were shooting babies in the head i highly doubt the canadian army would stand up for its people and save the innocent i suppose i have strayed from putting black boxes into cars to stephen harper declaring himself a dictator so oops

| duuude, i know this COULD happen, but probably not with stephen harper, and I think this would go down in the states wayyy before canadians leaders even think about becoming a dictatorship..i think you read too much, or watch too many late night Big Brother Documentaries * The day Canada Gets the Death Penalty, and Give it for Speeders, is the Day I Die, and I wont be alone | |
