| In everyones interest here, no one wants to hear about our GICs, mutual funds, RRSP, sask pension plan, and general investments and stocks. They are going to tell us to take it to 306motorclub pretty soon | |

| I like black wheels, but I also dispise them. They look badass, but they really hide the detail of the wheel, and make the car feel like its missing something. The blue might be able to pull it off. | |

| Well that's the ongoing thought at work, but for now nothing at all. I just want to start cleaning it up, then see where it goes. Eventually there will be something done under the hood. Might just be pull the 1.8 (M10) engine out and rebuild it, (big shrick cam and twin sidedrafts would have visual pop and be proper old school). Or possibly buy a salvage title E30 and do the 6cyl (2.5 inline M20) swap. The big M30 3.5 inline 6s from the 5 and 7 series actually bolt right into my trans. But pretty much end up in the rad, and need some trickery to make it work. The nice thing about the M20 and M30 6 cyl swaps is that whole smashed up cars can be had for as little as $500. Could go Chev V8 too. who knows. I have been reading about the 5.3 out of the trucks a lot lately. They start at 270hp/315tq and go up from there depending on year. Very easy and affordable to acquire that engine, wiring harness and having the ECU hacked is another thing I would expect it to cost as much as the engine itself.. Motor mounts/sub frame/trans mount I know enough guys who can weld to trade some beer for services. Driveshaft you can have made locally. I have a stock LSD, they say if you don't run crazy sticky tires and drag launch it they will hold up for a long time. (but you never know) Howver my research seems to indicate getting the manual trans partworked out is very expensive. 6spd aren't cheap or really that easy to find locally and 5spd's are becoming rare, I really wouldn't want an older 4 spd. I could easily see a fuel injected V8/manual trans attempt stacking up in cost faster then one might think. | |

| m20 swaps are quite affordable, and 170hp in a car that light makes them really move, plus the sound! Ive seen lots of m30 swaps where the firewall was massaged back to get the engine to fit. Not easy work thats for sure, especially for a mear 40hp gain (especially when you could just toss a cam or stroke the m20 to get that same power, plus way lighter.
Ever consider an m50? Not quite as period correct, but can be had for quite cheap, and are a much more modern engine.
My vote though, would be for the m42 motor. I regret swapping it out of my e30 in favour for the 6 cyl, as I feel it ruined the car. Those m42 motors are bulletproof, with factory forged internals, and adjustable cams. Plus you could aquire a used bolt on supercharger for one, and youll have the same 210 hp as the m30, but be way lighter, with the motor stuffed way back in the engine bay, and itll just scream. The supercharged m42 motors make more torque at 2000rpm than a stock m42 makes at 7800rpm.

| Definetly leaning towards buying a salvage E30 with the 2.5/manual trans. 170hp in that car would make it just right, and with a bone stock engine I would have a nice reliable daily driver with more current EFI engine.
Talked a bit to Adam today about the M42, engine is very nice but if you have to have a drive shaft made you might as well go for the 6cyl. But of course a really nice price came buy on a crashed up 318i, I can't say for sure I would pass on it.

| Im pretty sure the m42 motor will bolt up to a m10 5 speed transmission, and you can get a 5 speed out of 84-85 318i and even some 320i e21 cars had a 5 speed. | |

| mine is a oem 5 spd with LSD if the m42 fit in that trans I would probably go that route for simplicity sake. | |
