I know what you are saying, and I was trying to make the point that it is almost impossible to have perfect/100% reliable plans for every possible disaster. But when you are dealing with something as important as our oceans/wildlife/ecosystems/etc, it would be nice if more care was taken.
If that shit leaks until they get their relief wells are drilled (just heard on cnbc that could take up to 3 months), the negative externalities would be so fucking large and widespread (not that it isn't already). The costs are so large, and seem to overshadow whatever the value would have been of all the future oil that would have been pumped out.
but I am sure some traders out there made a killing shorting the stock, and there is plenty of wealth being wiped out as the stock continues to plunge. So there is some justice in the world.

they do know how to fix it, its just how. You have no idea how much pressure is being shot out of that pipe that has a 18-19" diameter. Its pumping 72,000 barrels a day!!!! a good producing well in sask is 200 barrels a day.

this video show what they want to do pretty good. AND they have pretty much stopped the leak. When you look at that live feed video the only thing being shot out is drilling mud. They have force fed the pipe a high pressure of drilling mud and just keep pumping more once the oil gets closer to the surface.

I am pretty sure they value human lives as the present value of all their future cash flows
but since ducks don't make any money I am not sure if they value their lives at 0 or not.

Id take any value given with a grain of salt, as their first estimates of what it was leaking were like 1/4 of the truth.

Does anybody know if BP is on the hook for every single dollar in the relief/lets fix what has been fucked up effort.
I remember hearing on cnbc when it just happened, they had the CEO of BP come on and say it wasen't their guys who fucked up, but some contracted workers or something from a different company.

They have over 20,000 people working to fix/clean it up.

Things down there are super fucked up though. BP told everyone they were doing the top fill, but they shut it down for 16 hours and did nothing yesterday. They didn't bother telling anyone they were stopping either.

i can totally agree cause even though they fucked up they're still nabbing as much oil as they can from the broken riser.

if anyones watching right now you can see the ROV back on the ship being fixed kinda funny cause i dont think some of them know they're still live.
