The city definately spreads an ice melting agent on the streets. I know that the city uses a sand/salt mix, a rock salt and liquid Calcium Chloride. Keep in mind though when I say salt it may not be 'salt' per say but some slat like substance that will melt ice.

Nah. I work for the city in roadways. They were mixing sand/salt in th fall and were receiving deliveries of the rock salt during the summer last year. I also saw one of the Tandems with Calcium Chloride in the tanks tanks on the side of the box a few weeks back. Calcium chloride is by far the nastiest think they use on the roads. It is very effective but corosive. Regina really has it pretty good compared to out east where they dump tons upon tons of salt on the roads. Never buy a used car from Ottawa or Montreal.
