I have a whine coming from my car it gets louder as the rmp's increase I think it might be a pulley. It sounds like a JRSC when I drive. What can I check to make sure its not that water pump going. Don't have much time to do anything really with finals right now though.

i had the same problem as well. except mine was my a/c pump.

IIRC, you can check this by sitting in one spot and turning the steering wheel, if it starts to whine again thats your problem. doesnt sound like it though

First its not power steering it has EPS and my stereo head unit is stock only the rear speakers were replaced with alpines. On other another website they say idler pulley. Now looking at diagram I don't think its the water pump it sounds like the top pulley. I'll take a pic in just a bit have to go to Nemco quickly.

I don't know how this is supposed to help. Its difficult to see if a pulley is "worn" by these pictures. See if the pulley has any play front-to-back, or side-to-side, or up and down. I don't think it is a pully though..

If its the top one then the bearings inside it might be shot, could be as simple as that. There are ways to check by taking it off and spinning it or something like that. Tho anyone of the accessories can make whining noises so its key to know exactly where its coming from.

How about using a screwdriver to the ear to hear what is making the noise.

if its a bearing going, spray it with some type of lubricant. spray the bearking while its turning and if it stops doing its thing, you know thats what needs to be replaced.

No it started end of October I've been driving with no music now and hear it now. I know the pics aren't to show whats worn its to show that when I go to order parts I order the right stuff. So the top pulley is the idler pulley right. Thats what I'm ordering first I'll see how much it is here but I'm sure the part guy down in the states can hook me up.

Edit: Damn it the guy is on holidays till Jan. shit guess I'll be getting ass raped by Honda.

evan, dont waist your money by buying random parts you MIGHT think are the problem. I see so many people come into my work and do that. i tell them. "make sure that this is the problem before your instal it." they put it in, nothing changes and they are pissed off because they are out 80$ and 3 hours of hard work and still have something to fix.

I might have tomorrow off of work to look more at it or Monday. First I'm going try and spray some lube in it if not I'm going to take the idler pulley off and look closer at it. I should just take it to Honda I need a valve lash done and well I can never get it perfect so for my money I'll bitch at them till I can barely hear my valves tick..

Ya I know. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I read in the MK2 VW Golf Service Manual that those valves were self adjusting(Hydraulic lifters whatever) , that was a '92 this is a '04 civic any advantage over either?

I kinda miss that little car would've liked a vr6 in it.
