The 7m stock torque for the head bolts is 60 ft-lbs, ARP suggests 90ft-lbs for their bolts... Thats quite a jump. What do you recommend? I dont want to over torque and wreck the head/block.

I heard it's because the original head gasket contained asbestos and then Toyota had to change it at the last moment, but never changed the torque specs, or had the time to really test the new gasket/determine a different torque spec, hence the notorious 7m head gasket failures. Or so the legend goes anyways.

pretty much spot on.
toyota updated it in the 91-92 models I belive but still didn't help becauses the torque spec was too low. most people belive that the stock gasket is garabge and an aftermarket metal one is a must but reality is the stocker gasekt with arp bolts had been proven to handle up to the 400whp range. anything above that then its suggested to go metal headgasekt.

also to the OP use the ARP spec.
