Made in USA CANADA or MEXICO is 0% duty.

Most automotive parts are 6% duty.

Tires are 7% duty.

Chances are they didn't charge you on the wheels. Consider yourself lucky.

7% ? Times that by 3 and it would make sense... WTF!?!?

400(tires and shipping) x .07 = 28 bucks

28 x 3.5 = 98

500 for tires isn't bad, just saying!

was that from Tires-easy?

And was it Duty or Brokerage? UPS will cram a base bat up your ass, best to always ask the shipper to send it any other way. If they won't I usually take my buisness elsewhere. Use anybody else like USPS (US Postal Service) FedEX, DHL, etc But never UPS.

Importation 101

Customs - The government department that contols and monitors the transferring of things over the border.

Duty - a tax on product meant to protect the domestic economy

Brokerage - Service that a company performs for a customer that facilitates the importation of an item into the country.

Ok now let's do a simple calculation.

Four tires @ $100 = $400

Duty @ 7% = $28

Subtototal = $428

Tax (GST+PST) = $42.80

Total before brokerage = $470.80

Now for brokerage. Depending on the type of service it was shipped with it is anyones guess.

Yep found the receipt and duty was exactly what you said it would be, it was the brokerage that bent me over.

NEVER EVER SHIP UPS, they have a minimum $45 brokerage fee, and it only goes up from there, plus add your duty and the rest as stated above.

either ship USPS, or also try if its a private sale to get the seller to mark the item as a gift and value it at $25, keep in mind this offers you little to no insurance if the package gets lost, just a good gamble if your trying to save a buck, i have never once has a product get lost in the hands of USPS or Canada Post

Nah that's great, everybody knows the money you pay for wheels the better they are. It would have been better to pay 4 guys hourly wages, plus expenses to strao them onto their back and hike them up over the border. But whatever, UPS is still pretty Legit.

p.s. why is everybody's sig broken? The quotes never work.

UPS is a joke, I paid $100 in duties for my coilovers. I just got a package from Germany with some goodies and didn't even get charged duty so it cost less to get parts from there than to get parts from the states. The basic rule is anything but UPS and the charges will usually be reasonable.

I was expecting 100+ dollars for brokerage/customs charges for my rims that apparently weigh 18 pounds a piece(72 pounds in total)... I would like to know why, maybe cause they weren't made in the states?

Weight has absolutely nothing to do with charges unless you are importing a raw commodity like Aluminum or Barley.

And if you think you got off easy with charges, don't go out and celebrate quite yet. Sometimes stuff can be 'cleared' through customs without the fees actually being calculated.

Then you get a nice invoice in the mail a few weeks later with the charges. This happens often with stuff that is expressed or sent with an expedited service.

Back from the dead

I phoned www.Tires-Easy.ca and asked about the Federals availability. They have them in their warehouse, and can do them delivered for $440. (that's the price after Shipping charges, GST and Tire Levy)

They said the ship UPS, and I said "so their will be brokerage fees?" and he said they have their own broker (We do at my work too) so should not be anything extra charged from UPS at the door. If they do try and charge me, get an invoice and then submit it back to them and they will go after UPS. They pre-charged for GST, so that's a good sign they know what they are doing. I imagine some duty charges will apply, but how much? Maybe Golks know what the Duty % is on tires?

So knowing UPS, I'm still expecting to get fucked on Brokerage, ought to put the tires at $500-$550, and then go after Tires-Easy.ca for brokerage. If they somehow show up with no extra fees,(this has happened before) then I'm ahead of the game.

Locally that tire has become hard to get. Fountain wanted to sell me GT Champiros for $524 a set, plus Tax and Levy. Sad
