This is to help out a friend whose car got claimed totaled. Quick story is that his car got in a hit and run at the beginning of this year. he claimed it. then a month later it got vandalized. he claimed it to. Now SGI sayd that it is totaled. however none of the incidents by itself makes it a total lost. they werent that big. But somehow SGI is putting both claims together and claiming it to be totaled. However he is requested to pay 2 deductables. why would he pay two deductables when SGI is combining/summin up both events into one and charging two claims?
Here is my friends letter to SGI:
This is a letter I wrote to SGI. I sent it to my adjuster’s supervisor and to the East Claim Centre manager (because I haven’t received a reply from the supervisor in a while), and I’m CCing my adjuster.
Has anyone had any problems with SGI similar to what I’m experiencing? What steps did you take? What was the outcome? Thank you for your input.
All,
I have an unresolved issue with my 2 SGI claims and I am writing this email so that we can reach an agreement without need of further escalation.
I was the victim of a hit and run on April 1, 2009 and of vandalism done to my vehicle on May 1, 2009. The second incident occurred before I received a response from SGI so that I could pay the deductible and repair the damages.
The damages caused by the hit and run, as mentioned by my adjuster, were not enough for my car to be a total loss. Furthermore, the damages caused only by the vandalism itself are not enough for my car to be a total loss either as explained below. However, the car was deemed a total loss because the damages of both claims are being considered as one single incident and they exceed the value of my vehicle which is $3795 as determined by SGI.
It was determined that both damage costs are being summed together because the items listed on the assessment of the first claim are all included on the assessment of the second claim which also includes the vandalism damages. The total damages are $4090 and the damages of the first claim are $2248. Therefore, the damages caused by the second incident are $1842. As you can see, individually, neither incident caused damages exceeding the cost of the vehicle.
If I had received a notice from SGI for the first claim on time and had paid the deductible to repair my vehicle, and then had my car vandalised, I would agree on paying a second deductible to get my car fixed again. However, my car is not being fixed for either claim, I have to pay two deductibles and I end up without a vehicle. I don't understand why the damages are being considered together as if they were part of the same claim (hence deeming my car a total loss), but I'm being charged two deductibles for two claims.
I believe this is unfair and I should only be charged for one deductible.
Sincerely.
